GP2022 Event: From Bali for World Disaster Mitigation

The 7th Session of Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (GP2022) in Bali was marked by the hoisting of the red and white flag as well as the UN flag on Sunday (22/5/2022).

Mami Mizutori, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction and Head of UNDRR, and Lt. Gen. Suhariyanto, the head of the Indonesian National Board for Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) and Deputy Chair I of the GP2022 National Committee in Nusa Dua, Bali Province, all attended the procession.

“The Global Platform is an occasion for the global community to come together to learn from the COVID-19 tragedy, evaluate successes and challenges in working on disaster risk reduction, and to accelerate progress towards disaster resilience and sustainable development,” said Mami in her speech at the Bali Nusa Dua Convention Center (BNDCC).

The Government of Indonesia is hosting this event under the theme From Risk to Resilience: Towards Sustainable Development for All in a COVID-19 Transformed World. "Gotong Royong for Disaster Resilience " is another way of putting this concept.

The goal of the GP2022, according to Lt. Gen. Suharyanto, is to explore disaster risk reduction initiatives as a sustainable resilience effort. He also hoped that the delegates would utilize this event to exchange knowledge about disaster risk reduction and mitigation strategies in the future.

"Meetings at the regional and global levels, such as this one, are extremely essential to be held as a place to share knowledge and experiences from local and national levels, and to be appointed as agreements and references at the global level," Suhariyanto added.

Furthermore, as Suhariyanto pointed out, Indonesia has demonstrated how the COVID-19 pandemic, which is an example of a threat that poses systemic risks, can be a window of opportunity for the country to learn and implement comprehensive reforms in the health, fiscal, and monetary sectors, as well as disaster management, both natural and non-natural phenomena.

The GP2022, like the G20 presidency, is an important aspect of Indonesia's global leadership series this year. The GP2022, with 193 delegates in attendance, is also expected to give possibilities for business actors to carry out socio-economic recovery.

Sudirman, as Deputy for Coordination of Regional Development Equity and Disaster Management at the Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Culture, Tjokorda Oka Artha Ardana Sukawati, as Deputy Governor of Bali Province, and all representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Communication Forum for Regional Leaders, as well as the ranks of BNPB Primary, Middle, and High Officials, all attended the event, which was held under strict health protocols.
